    Sampan Girl Smiles

We are proud to present our inaugural exhibition collaboration “Sampan Girl Smiles”, a showcase jointly curated by the Royal Museums Greenwich (London) and the Institute of Ancient Ships, Ningxia Maritime Museum.

“Sampan Girl Smiles” explores the maritime world of the 1930s presented through a series of black and white photographs by David Waters, featuring traditional sailing junks, coastal customs and historical ports in Southeast Asia, including Singapore. We will be presenting 100 selected photographs from the collection which best showcase the diverse local maritime customs that were observed in different regions, allowing a glimpse of folk customs relating to boat repairing, vessel launch ceremonies, prayers and other unique local traditions related to maritime culture during that era.

    Practical Astronomy

Learn how to identify time and location by getting acquainted with the sky!

Before satellites and technology, astronavigation is key to the discovery of new worlds by great explorers like Wang Dayuan, Zheng He and Christopher Columbus. It is still an essential skill for military aviators, with the United States Naval Academy reinstating astronavigation back into their curriculum in recent years.

At Practical Astronomy, Remus from Celestial Portraits will be sharing the basics of constellation patterns and behaviours, and how they affect tides, aide in navigation and in the identification of time and location.

Sign up to get started on astronomy at the Singapore Maritime Gallery!
